From the MFA Section of Core Sample. This section features works from the MFA Collection of artwork created by graduating MFA students in the Ceramic Art Division of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. This collection offers significant insight into the evolution of the 20th and 21st century American ceramic art. From the Ancestors Section of Core Sample. The Museum team named this section “ancestors” after selecting for the exhibition a group of pieces to give context to the other works on view. On view here are works from the pre-contact Americas as well as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, African, European and American Indian masterpieces.

This case, adjacent to the front desk, contains a variety of works, which serve as a general index to the exhibition. Central to this presentation are several pieces which shed light on the legendary contributions to the history of ceramic art by the ceramic art faculty of the Division of Ceramic Art, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

Core Sample: Selections from the Permanent Collection Exhibition

In celebration of the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum's move to its magnificent new facility, the Museum opened its doors on October 28, 2016, with an exhibition entitled Core Sample: Selections from the Permanent Collection. This exhibition presents a journey through time in the history of ceramic art. Approximately 160 pieces are on view, featuring the art of the renowned Alfred University ceramic art faculty as well as other major 20th and 21st century American and International ceramic artists. In addition are extraordinary works by what the Museum terms "Ancestors" – a collection of ceramic art of the ancient Americas as well as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, African and American Indian masterpieces. Featured as well are the astonishing works from the Museum's MFA collection. This unique collection represents the creativity and intellectual rigor of those artists who have received master's degrees in ceramic art from Alfred University.
