Receptive Volumes

Opening June 1st, with a reception September 14th, and closing September 29, 2006, Receptive Volumes gives our museum visitors an opportunity to view pieces from the permanent collection that have been resting in storage with our other hidden treasures.

This exhibition focuses on ceramic vessels. It includes work that ranges from utilitarian to sculptural. What they have in common is that, in the language of functionality, they are all related to platters, plates or bowls.

The pieces in the gallery will be more horizontal than vertical; welcoming, open, receptive works that seem to beckon the viewer to come toward them. Visitors will see no teapots, pitchers or vases, no installation pieces or towering sculptures.

Curated by John Gill and Susan Kowalczyk, objects in this exhibition include work by Charles Fergus Binns, Scott Chamberlin, Marion Fosdick, Kenji Funaki, Charles Harder, Ken Little, Hal Reigger, Don Reitz, Kitaoji Rosanjin, Edwin and Mary Scheier, Peter Voulkos, Jun Kaneko, Don Schreckengost, Robert Sperry and Noriyasu Tsuchiya; the Gloryhole Collection provides pieces from, among others, Elissa Armstrong, Scott Chamberlin, Ursula Hargens, Graham Marks, Lisa Orr, Frank Ozereko and John Utgaard; European dinner plates from the Wesp Collection; Korean bowls from the Fox Collection; teabowls from the David and Ann Shaner Collection; and more.
